Thanks to doomandgloom’s article ANTI-CAPITALIST SONGS AND STORIES a few weeks ago I was inspired to write a new pro-union song. This isn’t a parody of the original lyrics to “America the Beautiful” by Katharine Lee Bates, but instead utilizes the powerful accompanying music, which is purposefully well known.
What better way to celebrate International Workers’ Day / May Day?!
My original plan was to record the song with me singing vocals and the background music and imagery. Better idea: introducing the KaraokeKos singalong. Feel free to hit “play” below and sing along. Thank you for listening and singing! And without further ado…
SO-LI-DAR-I-TY!!
The boss and corporations lie,
They make us work and pay,
Inflated prices they made up,
To keep us poor that way,
America, America
Do not forsake us now,
Push back against the corporate thieves,
Who worship golden crowns,
The boss conspires to keep us down,
Though billionaires they are,
Who sit around and laugh about,
Their travels wide and far,
American democracy,
We’ll never let it die!
We fight against those who would steal,
The labor we supply,
The bosses take our muscle-ache,
And our ideas too,
But while we sweat, they try to get,
More money (less for you),
America, my country true,
The union makes me free,
‘cause we hold all the power now,
Through SO-LI-DAR-I-TY!!
